The Place of Refuge
Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park
This is a "must see" place on the Big Island! Plan to spend at least a
day. Pack a lunch, because there is lots to do and see!
The Place of Refuge was the place for a second chance. Defeated warriors and Taboo
breakers were
granted safety if they could swim to the Place of Refuge.
South of the historic site is a great picnic area with access to the lava beach,
which is fun to explore.
The Place of Refuge is the most complete restoration of an ancient Hawaiian religious
sanctuary in Hawaii.
The Webmaster feels that this may be the most beautiful place on the Big Island!
The Place of Refuge is the most idyllic tropical paradise we have seen (at least above water)! It is peaceful, rejuvenating and awe inspiring!
To get there :
- On Highway 11 take Road number 160 and go to the bottom of the hill & turn left.
- Go a little further and you can go into the Parks parking lot or turn right leading
to Honaunau Bay & Keoneele Cove There is great snorkeling & shore diving
here.
