How to Get Here
You can get your airplane tickets
from just about anywhere, but it's highly recommended that you take advantage of a qualified travel agent!
Guess what? Today's your lucky day!
Martie, your host at Bougainvillea B&B, has over 25 years experience in the
travel industry, as a tour guide teacher of travel, travel agency owner / operator
in Hawaii. She is a Certified Travel Consultant (C.T.C.) and holds a Hawaii State
Travel Agency license She can help you plan your vacation before you leave as well
as during your stay in Hawaii. She can help you with air & car packages, car
rentals, tours, airport pick up, etc.
Not only does Martie have extensive knowledge of the travel industry and the Big Island, but she will also get you the best rates!
Give her a call at 1-800-688-1763
Flights & Airports
You can fly into either Kona or Hilo, but check for schedule
changes a day before heading to the airport, as schedules can change. United Airlines
often has direct flights into Kona from San Francisco or Los Angeles. A direct route saves you an
inter-island flight from Honolulu.
What to Pack
The first time people travel to the tropics, they tend to pack too many things!
What you should pack depends on what you plan to do. So here is a helpful list of
things to pack;
-
At least two bathing suits
-
Thongs or sandals (and/or golf shoes)
-
Reef shoes or throw-a-way runners for beach combing
-
Hiking shoes for Volcanoes National Park and other walking adventures
-
Mask, snorkel and fins for snorkelling
-
Camcorders, cameras & film (and batteries!)
-
Sweaters and long pants for higher elevations such as hiking around Mauna Kea or
Waimea.
-
Light rain jacket
-
Lots of shorts, preferably cotton or cotton blend
-
Cotton shirts
-
Hats, golf visors and/or dress hats
-
Backpack & water bottles!
-
Waterproof sunblock
Need a Ride?
The Big Island is almost twice the size of all the other island combined! It is
approximately the same size as the state of Connecticut.
You will need to rent a car!
Car rental companies are at all the airports. It is possible to rent a car when you get
here but we recommend that you make a reservation, especially during peak times like
Christmas.
Bougainvillea B & B Innkeeper Martie Nitsche can also help you make a reservation
- Give her a call.
She can also tell you which gas stations have the best prices and can help you find
where you want to go on the Big Island.
Highway distances & drive times
Traffic peaks in Kona and Hilo are about 6-8 am and 4-6pm so adjust accordingly
